Science is not enough. The stereotypical view of humanism as a purely rational worldview, centered solely on a third–person perspective of the world, has become inadequate. Science itself has demonstrated that we are hard-wired for empathy and connection. Moreover, many members of a rapidly growing segment of Americans consider themselves to be “spiritual but not religious.” Whole person humanism, as promulgated by UU Humanists and others, seeks to integrate first-person experience, second-person empathy, and third-person rationality into a life stance that fully appreciates the wonder and celebrates the awe of being alive.
